Personnel to Use

Let’s go over the personnel you should use for this playbook. You can definitely move people around to confuse the other team or for your players to have a good time.

The X receiver position should be a tall athletic kid able to go up and get the ball with great hands.

Z, the other outside receiver position, needs to have good hands and be decently fast and run with the ball well.

H needs to be able to run quick routes underneath so make sure his change of direction is good.

Y is meant for a taller person who is able to make contested catches.

F is like a running back, but you can’t hand it off, so he needs to be able to catch the short passes and make something out of it.

Lastly, but certainly still important, Is the QB. The two most important things are accuracy and football intelligence. There are plenty of players who can throw the ball 100 yards but can’t play QB.

5 Keys to a Pass Play

There are 5 things that I look to do when I create a pass play.

  1. Creating one-on-one matchups is important if you have the better athlete. If your player can beat the defender down the field or on the route, that can be a big play.
  2. Second is making the defenders choose which receiver they have to cover, especially the corners and safeties. A simple route to make the corner choose is have the outside receiver run a hitch and having the slot receiver run a corner route or smash concept. There are others that I like to use as well as that one but that is the simplest example of it.
  3. Shorten the throw and make the defenders chase the route by having the QB do rollouts. And if you run enough rollouts, you can fake the rollout and throw it back to the other side if the QB can make the throw.
  4. Set up plays by throwing the short quick passes, and then run another play that looks similar to it but you throw it deep for the big chunk play.
  5. The last thing that you can do for a pass play is send players in motion. This causes the defense to be slightly confused and have to make quick decisions. It also realigns the defense and opens up new mismatches and route concepts. For example, in some of the 150 pass plays, there is a motion where the H motions behind the X into a stack. This is similar to what the Dolphins do to get Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle wide open and has led to a lot of success this year for them.
