Another Game of Coaching Junior Football

We lost another game, but we had significant improvement this game. We went out there and took a lead into half, 6-0. Unfortunately the lead didn’t last, but the improvement was hopeful to see.

One thing as a Coach that I noticed was our lack of diversity in play calling. We have to be able to run the ball from every formation anywhere we want to go. If we are in spread, we should be able to run to any gap with any scheme. The o-line can block it, and the backfield can do it. We can run it under center, so why not in spread, or pistol. I don’t want plays, I want to pair formations and concepts, and motions along with that. It’s easier for the players, harder for the coaches. Unfortunately, I am not the final opinion, but we can work on it.

We need to stop passing at all. It is detrimental and kills any momentum that we have. This goes for any level of football. If your QB can’t throw, don’t throw. Look at Michigan. They’re doing it at a pretty high level right now. Now, it definitely isn’t sustainable. But in youth football, why the flip not. Unless you have a good QB, keep it on the ground please. Throwing picks and taking sacks doesn’t help anyone.

If you do throw, keep it short. Simplify reads, and make the passes easy. You don’t need a touchdown every pass play. Be patient.

Another thing is switch up the cadence. You have to go on colors, on set, and on go, on 2 , on 3, on the 5th word that starts with G. Whatever it is that you want. We did it at 8 years old, anyone can handle it, it just takes practice and patience, and accountability.

And finally, get a cage and make them stay low. We finally did that this week and it worked wonders for our offensive and defensive lines.

P.S. Thank you for reading, and Geno Smith will ball out tonight and win MVP this year.
